Hello everybody! Do you have problems using: used, get used and be used to? You are not alone and I invite you to practice these in my English lesson about the history of dating. So let's start!
Dating in North America didn't exist over a hundred years ago. In fact, it was called "courtship"
It wasn't until the 1920s that young people were able to escape their parents'house to go dating. This is where the expression "ask someone out"came from. It means let's leave you mom and dad's house and be somewhere by ourselves.
Young people got used to "going steady" i.e. dating for a long period of time by the 1940s and 50s.
In the 1960s and 70s young women got used to taking the pill in order to avoid getting pregnant.
In the 1980s and 90s, you people started to get used the idea of hooking up. Some used to go dating, some preferred just hooking up.
Surprisingly, now at least 22% of young people in North America are used to spending their first date online via an app called Tinder. Dating nowadays is as easy as "swiping right".
