Many of us have such a stressful lifestyle. We work or study all day and then we come home and try to make sure that we have something to eat and if we’re lucky we have enough time to unwind by watching some TV or surfing the internet etc.
This topic was the theme of my last TV show with my private students, but I would like to share the same idea and vocabulary on this forum. Here are some expressions related to relaxation:
breathe easy, calm, calm down, collect oneself, compose oneself, cool off, ease off, feel at home, hang loose, knock off, laze, let oneself go, lie down, loosen up, make oneself at home, put one’s feet up, recline, repose, rest, settle back, simmer down, sit around, sit back, soften, stop work, take a break, take a breather, take it easy, take one’s time, take ten, take time out, tranquilize, unbend, unlax, unwind

Try to explain in a sentence using one of these new words or expressions how you like to relax. I will start.

Steve: I like to ‘unwind’ after a hard day by going for a jog or by doing some yoga and meditation.

      How about you?

I love to “settle back” into my armchair and have a nap to refresh and refocus my mind

sounds nice! in informal English here, we can call that nap a ‘power nap’ since it allows us to recharge our batteries!!!!

Watching the full moon or the sunrise tranquilizes me.

    • Profile picture of Steve Ford Steve Ford said 3 years ago:

Good one Elisabetta! If you had to choose, would you prefer the moon or sun as your most relaxing celestial body?

    • Profile picture of Elisabetta Elisabetta said 3 years ago:

If I had to choose, I think I would prefer the moon, because I can observe it from the window in the silence of my bedroom and in the dark of the night. Otherwise I love watching the sunrise and let the warm brightness of the rays of the sun flow through my body: that makes me feel lightened with positive energy.

Thanks Elisabetta for sharing that!!! I used to like the moon, but after Parallel 1 and Serena, I am becoming a huge fan of the sun! You have a very poetic way of writing: ‘the warm brightness of the rays of the sun flow through my body: that makes me feel lightened with positive energy’. When do we get to see some Elisabetta poetry? :)

    • Profile picture of Elisabetta Elisabetta said 3 years ago:

      :D :D :D I can clearly understand your reasons after Parallel 1 ;)
By the way I’m glad to hear that my thought was intelligible. It isn’t simple for me to find the right English words to express my ideas and emotions. I know well Italian language but I’m not so good in knowing the right “weight” of English words. And…. poetic? Wow! What a great compliment! Thank you very much Steve! And thank you for suggesting this great forum! I hope many other Peppyclub members will participate in it. Come on guys! We are waiting of you! :)

Elisabetta: Hey Elisabetta, you deserve the compliment and I want to thank you for bing such an active Peppy Club member!!!! I am working on an advanced video for Parallel 1 which I will be releasing soon.
gianghuong: Hey gianghuong, itá great that you like to get together with your friends to relax. I guess Peppy Club or facebook is like having online friends so maybe you could add that to your list of finding a way to relax and practice English :)

That’s great Heba! We are such an internet centered society now. What on earth would people do without internet?

maybe at least (at last) they will know who’s are their neighbours? :D maybe some gardening or sports with them?, but not exchanging pumpkins on FB :D

    • Profile picture of Steve Ford Steve Ford said 3 years ago:

Ha! I haven’t talked to neighbours in a long time. Not a very good thing to do here unfortunately. Gardening and sports sounds good. I talk much more with Mrs. Ford since we don’t watch TV, only DVDs. Many times it’s simple things for us nowadyas like sitting on the balcony on a sunny day talking about life.
On a personal level, I prefer meditation and running along the seawalk near my apartment: The Sea, The Sun, a breeze, music on my ipod. Meditation. There’s never a ‘line up’ of people for the things I treasure most.
